Sonoma-Marin YF&R visit San Joaquin County for an Ag Tour

Farm & Ranch Readiness

By Sonoma-Marin YF&R

In May, 8 members of Sonoma-Marin YF&R spent the day in San Joaquin County. San Joaquin County YF&R and Sonoma-Marin YF&R partnered on an ag tour to educate their members about agriculture practices and operations.

”Our members were excited to learn about agriculture practices in a different region of the state” said Taylor Serres, president of Sonoma-Marin YF&R.

The first stop was at Morada Produce, a cherry packing house in Stockton.  Attendees of the tour were very interested to learn about the Cherry Industry and the steps the product goes through from grading, packaging and distributing.  “This year is a particular difficult year for the industry due to the lack of chill hours recorded due to the mild winter,” said Jake Samuels a cherry farmer from Linden, CA.

The second stop was at Kings Crown Produce, an asparagus packing house.  This packing house is one of the last operating packing houses in Stockton area, due to an exponential increase in asparagus production in Mexico.  Asparagus packing is very labor intensive, especially at Kings Crown. About 20% of the product packaging is done in wooden crates and exported to Japan.  “We are very fortunate to have such a strong relationship with our growers to keep this packing house going every year,” said Nancy with Kings Crown Produce.

The last stop was at Delta Blue Grass a sod company that also produced potatoes, tomatoes and asparagus.  YF&R members toured their multiple packing lines and their state of the art cold storage facility where they house all of their potato buds before planting.  Larry with Delta Blue Grass spoke about their employees and the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with them, his words of wisdom, “If you work with and respect your employees they will respect you, which makes for a much happier work environment for all.”

Overall this trip was very successful and informative. YF&R looks forward to hosting San Joaquin County YF&R in October to tour Sonoma and Marin Counties.
