A Year of Success

As I am writing this I can’t believe a year has already gone by as president of this organization. No doubt the busier you are the faster time goes by and that could not be truer this year.

As I look back on what we have accomplished, I could not be more proud of our organization. One of accomplishments is hitting our annual membership goal set by the state Farm Bureau. This would not have been possible without the efforts of our amazing staff. Thanks to all of you that helped, especially Raven!

Another accomplishment includes the hiring of our executive director Kim Vail. One of the first things that I discovered upon being elected President is that our former Executive Director Tim Tesconi was planning on retiring. Those were big shoes to fill and we wondered how we would pull that off, but I am confident that we have.

Another major accomplishment for our organization is continuing to grow our annual crab feed and maintaining it as the best crab feed in Sonoma County. This is good news for us and great news for the dozens of kids that benefit from over $100,000 in scholarships in large part due to the money it raises.

That is a snapshot of some of the internal successes we have had. While the success of the Farm News and our safety programs are a couple more, I believe overall Farm Bureau has had a great year. With all of these successes, we continue to work on many issues not least of which is water.

Water is definitely the word and issue for agriculture for 2015. Water in any context and wherever you can find it. I would like to thank Tito Sasaki, our past president who volunteered to be our water guru. He has had his hands full, but has done a great job understanding the various intertwined water issues that we are engaged in.

Unfortunately it seems the issues don’t stop coming. One of the other things we continue to work on includes the winery events ordinance being proposed by PRMD. Thank all of you that showed up to the public meeting November 16. We will need your help again as this goes to the planning commission and board of supervisors so please keep your bright green shirts handy. It is definitely safe to say there is never a dull moment at Farm Bureau.

The good news is the holidays are here, and it is time to focus on family and friends and remember what is most important. Hopefully we get a nice wet winter and this El Nino event does not disappoint us. I want to wish all of our members Happy Holidays. If anyone is still looking for something to give or needs an idea for a stocking stuffer I will use this opportunity to make another announcement about the Friend of Farm Bureau we have available for $25 to our non-farming friends and supporters. Also please know we have membership stickers available and it would be great to see one on every member’s vehicle in 2016. For more information on either of those things please contact Raven Castro at the Farm Bureau office at (707) 544-5575. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
