Ag Days 7-12 Grade Contest Guide for Teachers

These contest descriptions are meant to give you and your students ideas and examples to spark creativity. They are not requirements, just inspiration to help you get started. We encourage you to interpret the theme in your own way, use the materials and styles that work best for your class, and have fun with the process. The most exciting part of Ag Days is seeing the unique creativity and perspectives each classroom brings to life!

Photo Contest

  • Theme Connection: Capture Sonoma agriculture’s role in nourishing communities and protecting natural resources.
  • Ideas: A vineyard with solar panels, a pollinator garden, a local crop headed to market, or farmworkers harvesting.
  • Tips: Encourage students to include captions that tie the photo back to both local food and global connections.

Ag Business Logo

  • Theme Connection: Showcase how Sonoma’s ag businesses brand themselves as part of a global food system while staying rooted locally.
  • Ideas: Logos for a dairy, orchard, or vineyard that highlight sustainability (leaves, water drops, bees, compost symbols) and global reach (globe, arrows, people).
  • Tips: Students can sketch by hand or design digitally; focus on clarity and symbolism.

“FarmTalk” Video

  • Theme Connection: Share the story of how Sonoma’s crops and animals both feed the world and support climate-smart farming practices.
  • Ideas: Research dairy, apples, wine grapes, or sheep in Sonoma. Explain their history, global reach, and sustainable practices.
  • Tips: Videos can be simple—recorded on a phone—using interviews, images, or a narrated slideshow. Max 3 minutes.

Social Media Post

  • Theme Connection: Use digital storytelling to share agriculture’s impact locally and globally.
  • Ideas: Create a post about local honey production, showing bees at work and explaining pollinators’ role in global food systems. Or highlight how local dairies use compost and cover crops to protect the land.
  • Tips: Encourage students to use strong visuals with short, catchy text—just like a real social media campaign.

Recipe Contest (New for 2026!)

  • Theme Connection: Celebrate Sonoma’s ingredients in healthy, creative dishes that could be enjoyed locally and globally.
  • Ideas:
    • Apple empanadas (local fruit + global influence)
    • Goat cheese flatbread (Sonoma dairy + global flavors)
    • Seasonal veggie stir-fry with Sonoma olive oil
  • Tips: Students should include a photo of the dish and a short write-up on why the recipe reflects Sonoma’s role in nourishing communities and protecting resources.
